Outside the Box: Palm beach County Art in Public Places

Everything is Connected by Freddy Hennevelt
NW Avenue L & NW 12th Street (Northeast Corner), Belle Glade, FL

The Lake Region is known for its agriculture, football and Lake Okeechobee's natural beauty. I love nature and wanted to take the opportunity to show the relation with nature to people and everything around us. You can see a young man chasing a rabbit. The left side of his body shows a football player. Nature provides food and the young man is developing skills and maybe, if he has enough fire in his heart, he will be a famous football player in the future.

Medium: Acrylic Paint on Canvas
Completed in 2020.

Outside the Box features twelve public art installations inspired by contemporary and historical aspects of Belle Glade and Pahokee, in Palm Beach County’s Lake Region.

Artists based in The Palm Beaches created original two-dimensional artworks with diverse materials that were translated onto adhesive vinyl wraps, transforming traffic signal boxes into three-dimensional sculptures and pedestrian scale murals all rolled into one.

Traffic signal boxes are ideal “canvases” to enhance streetscapes, humanize the built environment and foster a unique sense of place for residents and visitors to The Lake Region. Read More Click Here

Art Adventures of The Palm Beaches which features Palm Beach County Art in Public Places’ “Outside the Box” art installations that transform ordinary traffic signal boxes into extraordinary public art.

The episode hosted by Angela Yungk and Jessie Prugh showcases twelve artworks which were installed this past summer, interviews with three (Freddy Hennevelt will be one of the 3 interviewees) of the twelve artists and Elayna Toby Singer, and footage of the Lake Region.

Other non-County commissioned public art projects are also featured. Click here to view the video.

Artist Statement

Art has been a part of my life from early on and I have been making art as long as I can remember. My first art sale was a pen and ink drawing from a church in Utrecht, The Netherlands. I am mostly self taught but have taken numerous art classes from different artists of which the most memorable are mentioned below. I sell my art online via our Hennevelt’s Gallery website, at local art shows and on commission.

I am a sculptor, wood carver, painter and photographer but my main interest is in sculpting and painting. What I love is what I paint and sculpt and what I most of all love is Fantasy and Wild Life Art. My love for nature comes from hikes and camping trips in the beautiful nature parks of Europe and America. I always carry my camera and sketchbook and photograph and draw the birds and other animals that I spot.

The Fantasy art is just the best fun you can have in art in my opinion. You can come up with anything and everything and it can never be too crazy. You can design new worlds with animals and characters and sculpt or paint it to give it life.

I am a creator and will always create because it makes me happy. It’s great to see others love my work and to make a connection with people through art.
